The proliferation of generative AI tools shaved off precious time in writing content from days to seconds. ChatGPT is to thank for the upward trend of using AI for content creation. Thus, many companies have followed suit and adopted AI into their apps to retain customers and improve productivity and outputs. One of those is Grammarly, which introduced AI in 2023. And if you want to see which would better fit your written content creation efforts, here’s our Grammarly vs ChatGPT review.

Writing

Grammarly

Grammarly has a list of possible prompts to get you started on what it can ideate or generate. However, think of Grammarly as an AI writer that can stand on its own by generating content or copy. Once it creates content, you’ll review it first. Then, you can change the tone or let Grammarly rewrite the whole thing. But if you want to stick to writing by yourself and need ideas, Grammarly can give you content ideas to get you started.

I even asked if it could write an article in someone’s brand voice; it does, too! However, it would be good to check if it aligns with IKEA’s brand voice. If you want Grammarly to write in your brand voice, create a brand voice profile that Grammarly will use as a model.

ChatGPT

The generative AI that started it all. ChatGPT has become the partner for all things generated content. ChatGPT will generate blogs, copy, and other written content. Plus, it will generate content ideas, too, if you prompt it.

However, one significant limitation of ChatGPT, especially on the free account, is its training time. ChatGPT 3.5 is only trained up to 2022, which is outdated. You can “train” ChatGPT to your brand voice, but you must provide examples. Plus, ChatGPT admits that it doesn’t truly replicate your voice but will emulate it. Here’s its response.

Editing

Grammarly

Grammarly is one of the top-of-the-line grammar editors. It fixes the following:

  • Correctness
  • Clarity
  • Engagement
  • Delivery
  • Style guide

Grammarly is ideal if you want quick grammar fixes like correctness. With Grammarly’s help, you can avoid grammatical blunders before publishing your work!

You’re free to reject Grammarly’s suggestions if you prefer your own version. Sometimes, Grammarly still insists on fixing that. Additionally, Grammarly’s suggestions tend to be not-so-grammatically correct as well. It doesn’t get context from your previous sentences about why you might say a particular sentence or phrase. Still, Grammarly is one of the best editing tools, and you can rely on it to polish your written work.

ChatGPT

chatgpt response to editing

ChatGPT isn’t just a generative AI tool. You can ask it to edit your work. Send them a copy and ChatGPT will analyze it and how to improve it. For example, I told ChatGPT to edit one of my blogs. It gave me suggestions immediately. I preferred that it gave me feedback first, so I asked for it, and it gave recommendations on how to improve my blog!

A disadvantage of ChatGPT in editing is that you have to prompt ChatGPT to make edits. It takes only a few minutes to type in how to edit it. However, it’s not like Grammarly, where it will already point out everything you need to amend. Plus, you also need to specify how ChatGPT should edit your work, like whether it should give you feedback or immediately make corrections.

How Do ChatGPT and Grammarly Edit Each Other’s Work?

I decided to test Grammarly and ChatGPT’s generative prowess against each other to see how they edit the other’s work. I asked ChatGPT and Grammarly for a 300-word blog about social media tips.

Generated Content

ChatGPT provided ten tips in a 300-word blog. However, upon checking, it appears that Grammarly and ChatGPT generated almost the same tips, like using visuals and prioritizing quality over quantity.

Editing

It’s surprising that ChatGPT only had 13 editing points, based on Grammarly’s analysis. Plus, it was grammatically correct for the most part.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT had notes about writing better introductions and adding call-to-actions. Plus, it also had notes on how to optimize your blog when you publish it. When I asked it to edit the blog, it rewrote most of Grammarly’s work. Plus, I asked ChatGPT to edit using its recommendations, but it didn’t quite understand what I wanted.

Plagiarism

The plagiarism tool lit up when I entered ChatGPT’s written content. Grammarly detected 63% of ChatGPT’s blog as plagiarized from various sources.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT doesn’t detect plagiarism, so it’s difficult to test for plagiarism using this tool. It recommends using AI plagiarism checkers.

How Much is Grammarly and ChatGPT?

grammarly pricing

Grammarly has three pricing plans, starting with a Free plan. The free plan allows users to write without mistakes, edit tones, and generate text with prompts. The generative AI tool is limited to 100 prompts.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT also has a free plan. But if you want a more updated language learning model, you can upgrade to the ChatGPT 4.0 model to get access to other tools, too!

Alternatives

Although Grammarly is the preferred grammar editor and ChatGPT the most accessible AI writer, here are some alternatives to try.

Wordtune

The closest competitor to Grammarly, with editing and generative AI, is Wordtune. Originally, Wordtune is known for its AI editing and rewriting capabilities. The AI company has also expanded to creating AI content.

Wordtune has a rewrite limit of 10 on the free plan for all content and copy. Plus, you can prompt the AI up to 3x a day. Finally, you can get three summaries a day! However, Wordtune has unlimited text corrections!

Rytr

Another contender for one of the best AI writers is Rytr. The AI tool generates written content and copy. Plus, it has a few editing features, such as:

  • Autocomplete text
  • Continue writing
  • Text inflator
  • Grammar checker

On the free plan, you access the following:

  • Generate up to 10,000 words monthly
  • 20 tones of voice
  • Chrome extension

It doesn’t allow you to create a branded voice profile. Plus, there are no plagiarism checks.

HyperWrite

HyperWrite is another AI writer with an editor tool. It has multiple use cases, such as email responder, AI writer, and blog post generator. Additionally, it can also expand and edit text. Unlike the other alternatives, HyperWrite doesn’t have a free plan. Here’s what is included in the Premium plan:

  • 200 credits
  • Unlimited typing suggestions

Conclusion

Despite introducing generative AI later, Grammarly has an edge above ChatGPT. As a leader in writing and editing, Grammarly can help businesses with their writing and editing.

However, let’s not dismiss ChatGPT. The AI tool has decent outputs that can match other AI writers. You can pair these two AI tools together to write faster and better. Either way, it’s up to you which tool is a much better fit for your content needs.
